Willits Branch Library is sponsoring a second community discussion on A Paradise built in hell: The extraordinary communities that arise in disaster, by Rebecca Solnit, as part of a Cal Humanities/California Reads Searching for Democracy grant. Join our open discussion on Tuesday, September 18th at 7 pm in the Willits Library conference room on the topics “What does the individual owe the community? What does the community owe the individual.” For more information, contact Anne Shirako at 463-4490.

Mendocino County residents only, all ages welcome.
WHAT:
ready-to-hang wall art in any medium, not to exceed 30”x40,” except with
special permission.
WHEN:
10/26/12. JPEG images to acugallery@att.net or mail/deliver photos
to Corner Gallery (11-5 pm). Please include short artist bio or statement and
contact information.
10/29/12: Jury will review all entries.
Artist notification will be made on Monday, 10/29/12 by email
or phone.
11/01/12: artwork delivery to the CORNER GALLERY, 201 S State St, Ukiah, 11-5 pm.
Exhibit dates: 11/2/12--11/30/12. Artwork
must be picked up on 11/30/12 between
11-5 pm.

WHY:
Mendocino County Library is participating in
statewide initiative for books, exhibits, lectures and programs to drive
discussions about the nature and needs of our democracy in Searching for
Democracy, an unprecedented statewide initiative by Cal Humanities (formerly
the California Council for the Humanities) designed to animate public
conversation on the nature and needs of democracy.
Mendocino County Library is presenting a range of public
programs inspired by our focus book, A
Paradise Built in Hell: the Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster,
by Rebecca Solnit. Programs include a poetry reading, lectures, community
discussions, a October author visit and talk by Solnit, and a juried art show
featuring interpretations of the theme, “Searching for Democracy.” Students,
families and people from all walks-of-life will explore what discoveries and
lessons about democracy lie in works of fiction and nonfiction, provocative
cultural exhibits and public conversations.
