Democracy, an unprecedented statewide initiative by Cal Humanities (formerly
the California Council for the Humanities) designed to animate public
conversation on the nature and needs of democracy.
Mendocino County Library is presenting a range of public
programs inspired by our focus book, A
Paradise Built in Hell: the Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster,
by Rebecca Solnit. Programs include a poetry reading, lectures, community
discussions, a October author visit and talk by Solnit, and a juried art show
featuring interpretations of the theme, “Searching for Democracy.” Students,
families and people from all walks-of-life will explore what discoveries and
lessons about democracy lie in works of fiction and nonfiction, provocative
cultural exhibits and public conversations.
